Double Vision is the recent jazz performance ensemble that brings together the remarkable talents of Austin jazz legends, John Mills and Hank Hehmsoth. With their combined experience of over 50 years in the Austin jazz scene, and award-winning credentials as jazz composers, Double Vision offers a unique musical experience that showcases their original compositions and exceptional artistry.

Since 2022, on Tuesday evenings, the "Two Compositional Pens of Austin Jazz", John Mills and Hank Hehmsoth, convene, as the Elephant Room presents Double Vision. John and Hank are joined by Aaron Easley on drums and Utah Hamrick on bass.

Objectives:
1.    Musical Innovation: Double Vision aims to push the boundaries of jazz through original compositions that fuse contemporary art music, jazz, and world music influences. We seek to create a signature American sound that is both distinctive and globally resonant. Our focus on socially engaged programming adds depth and purpose to our music, reflecting positively on our place in the global community.
2.    Exceptional Performances: Double Vision is committed to delivering captivating live performances that fascinate and engage audiences. With a repertoire comprised entirely of original compositions, each performance is a premiere of new jazz works, ensuring a fresh and exciting experience for listeners. Our ensemble's virtuosity, creativity, and ability to connect deeply with the audience will set us apart and create lasting impressions.
3.    Educational Outreach: Recognizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of jazz musicians, Double Vision will conduct educational initiatives, including workshops and masterclasses conducted at Texas State University School of Music and open to the public. By sharing our knowledge, expertise, and passion for jazz, we aim to inspire aspiring musicians and foster a love for this art form.
4.    Recording and Promotion: To extend the impact of our music beyond live performances, we plan to record our original compositions and release them through digital platforms and physical formats. These recordings will allow us to reach a wider audience and serve as promotional tools to showcase our unique musical style and attract new opportunities.
Implementation:
1.    Composition and Rehearsal: Double Vision will focus on collaborations between John Mills and Hank Hehmsoth to create a diverse repertoire of original compositions. Regular rehearsals will be conducted to refine and perfect the ensemble's performance, ensuring a cohesive and polished sound.
2.    Performance Schedule:  Double Vision had its inaugural performances during the 2022 season, beginning in April, and has performed regularly throughout the 2023 season. Additionally, bookings have already been secured for the 2024 season, indicating the strong demand and recognition for our ensemble. With funding assistance, we can expand our performance schedule and reach new audiences across various venues and festivals.
3.    Educational Initiatives: Double Vision will hold workshops and masterclasses to engage with aspiring musicians at Texas State University’s School of Music in conjunction with the jazz faculty. By sharing our expertise and passion for jazz, we aim to inspire and mentor the next generation of jazz artists, nurturing their growth and fostering a thriving jazz community.
4.    Recording and Promotion: Funding assistance will enable us to professionally record our original compositions, ensuring high-quality productions that capture the essence of Double Vision's unique sound. These recordings will be strategically released through various platforms to maximize exposure and attract new listeners. Additionally, funds will be allocated toward promotional efforts, including the creation of professional marketing materials and online advertising campaigns.
