ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
DAN MORGENSTERN is one of the world's foremost jazz authorities. The former editor-in-chief of Down Beat and Metronome magazines, Co-chairman of the Jazz Advisory Panel to the National Endowment for the Arts, a Trustee of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the New York Jazz Museum, Morgenstern has also been active as a television producer (the series "Just Jazz" for the Public Broadcasting Service), radio commentator ("The Scope of Jazz," Pacifica Network), and concert producer ("Jazz In The Garden," New York Museum of Modern Art).

The exhibit, Count Basie & His Bands, was presented at the N.Y Jazz Museum from November 12, 1974 to February 28, 1975. It featured photographs, artwork, posters, sheet music & memorabilia. Films of the Count & his great musicians were shown & an audio tape of his music played continuously over the Museum's sound system. A Count Basie poster designed especially for the exhibit by David Stone Martin and is featured on the cover

THE BEBOP ERA: Bird and Diz
The exhibit, THE BEBOP ERA: Bird & Diz, was presented at the N.Y. Jazz Museum from August 21, 1973 to November 9, 1973. It featured photographs, artwork, memorabilia, film and audiotapes of Charlie Parker (Bird) and Dizzy Gillespie.
A poster was designed especially for the exhibit by LeRoy Neiman and is featured on the cover.

Most of our musical instruments (electronics aside} evolved gradually from ancient archetypes. but the saxophone was invented on the drawing board in the 1840s by Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), a Belgian instrument maker in search of a sound that would combine the warmth of wood with the power of brass.
